How to Mount a Sharr as Read Only
question
Allow user to admission and see but certain subfolders on network shared drives
Hi Guys,
I am currently take a file server that running Windows Server 2016 Storage Server.
I have a binder that being setup every bit beneath:
Sharing_Folder
Sub_Folder1
Many_Sub_Folders2
I take shared the "Sharing_Folder" for "Everyone" with read only access. and then any user could map the "Sharing Folder". Then, once users are mapped with "Sharing_Folder", they should be able to see and traverse from Sharing_folder into the "Sub_Folder1" folders also (besides read only admission). These permission are inherited from "Sharing_Folder" as well. Only, when come into "Many_Sub_Folder2", i would like that users that being granted access to whatsoever specific folders to see only the folder that they have admission to. Meaning that though in that location are many "Many_Sub_Folder2", user can but see the folders that they take access to.
Currently, i tried to disable inheritance and given access to only specific users, but "Everyone" is however able to see those Sub_Folders2 even though they don't have access to.
Could you lot help to advise whether it is possible to attain this scenario?
Cheers

Howdy,
This is what i did in my surroundings.
Disable the inheritance, and assign the permission on the files and folders within the shared folder depends on your requirement.
All-time Regards,
You can employ User Groups and assign different folders different permissions assigned to dissimilar user groups. Users in a specific User Grouping would accept the permissions to admission those directories which allow that User Group admission.
Hullo Timcerling,
Actually, what i want to achieve is pretty simple. I want users can only see the folders that they has admission to. Meaning, though there are multiple subfolders, but they could only see the binder that they have access to. They should know the being of others folder.
Nevertheless, whatever permission i tried, users still able to run into all folders fifty-fifty though the could not admission it. But i don't want them to encounter it.
Delight assistance to suggest how to achieve this.
Thank you

Hey, H
When you give access to a parent binder, the children folder of that parent are as well given access to. If you desire to limit the access to subfolders, yous will need to revoke access from the parent binder and give just access to the subfolders. Or, remove the subfolder from the parent so it is no longer a subfolder and give admission to the new file path.

Hi,
Based on my understanding , yous desire to display only the files and folders that a user has permissions to access.
Access-based enumeration can be used to practise this.
Windows Explorer enables access-based enumeration on shared folders past default
Withal, admission-based enumeration is not enabled by default (can be enabled by using Share and Storage Management)on the following types of shared folders:
Shared folders that are created with Share and Storage Direction, Advanced Sharing in Windows Explorer, or the net share command
Volumes
Folders or volumes that are shared for administrative purposes, such as C$ and ADMIN$
For more than details and steps to do this you tin refer to :
Access-based Enumeration
My exam :
I created a folder and shared this folder by following way,(not advanced sharing)
At that place are two folders in the shared folder 1 and 2.
User MM1 only accept read permission on folder 1 , and so Windows Explorer displays only binder 1 as following

Dear Fan Fan,
Proficient Day
Sad for the late response.
Aye, you lot are right. I would like to know how to display merely the folders that users has the admission to. meaning that specific user will just run across specific folder which he/she has access. He/she should non come across the residue of the folders though they are there.
Could you lot help to advise how to achieve this?
Your assist and advise is greatly appreciated.
Many Cheers

Dear Fan fan,
I have further queries about ABE:
I did created a root shared folder called "Shared". This root shared binder will have iii sub folder below it. The three sub folder beneath are the one that going to have specific permission assigned. Meaning that user will just meet the folder if he/she has access right. in other word, if he only has access right to one folder so it will just display one sub binder, He won't see the rest ii folders.
As per your instructions, i have enabled "ABE" on the main "Shared folder". See film below:
Then, i will requite "Everyone" read only permission on the main "Shared" folder.
And so on the sub folder, i guess i volition need to disable inheritance correct? considering i need to remove "Everyone" read only access that being inherited from chief "Shared" folder to prevent he can meet others folder.
iis this method correct?
Thanks
Hullo,
This is what i did in my environment.
Disable the inheritance, and assign the permission on the files and folders within the shared binder depends on your requirement.
